About Curacao

CURACAO - GENERAL

The island nation of Curaçao is a small picturesque island in the southern  Caribbean. Curaçao is divided into 2 areas by the locals, Banda Ariba and Banda Abou. The first means “up side” and the latter “lower side” indicating which side of the island they’re located at. Banda Ariba is on the eastern side of the Curaçao (also known by locals as the “upper side of the bridge) and Banda Abou is on the western side of Curaçao (also known by locals being on the “lower” side of the bridge).

Being close to South America but yet Dutch (European) territory, Curaçao is in many ways a natural meeting place for international business conferences and meetings. It is therefore not surprising, that Curaçao for an island its size, has a good number of convention and conference centers. At National Car Rental Curaçao we have a great deal of experience serving business renters.

WILLEMSTAD - DOWN TOWN

Our down town area (Willemstad) is divided by the harbor which runs exactly through the middle of the capital. Characteristic of Willemstad is its typical Dutch architecture combined with some Spanish elements, this is reflected in the exquisite 18th and 17th century colonial buildings, all manifested in many different colors. As the story goes several centuries ago a former governor of the island couldn’t handle his migraine headaches caused by the buildings with their bright colors and ordered everyone to paint their building a different color. The down town area would also be appropriate for a business lunch with beautiful scenery.

All traffic in Curacao keeps to the right. In Curacao in general all traffic coming from the right has the right of way, unless otherwise indicated by traffic signs. Traffic signs in Curaçao, are in general, similar to traffic signs in Europe and the USA. Of important notice is that our roads get very slippery when raining. It is therefore important to slow down if driving when raining, even if just a few drizzles. You will no doubt notice all locals slowing down significantly at the first sign of rain. Keeping the above in mind will make your driving experience in Curaçao a safe and pleasant one. Should you have any more inquiries concerning traffic in Curacao please feel free to ask our rental agent at the counter when picking up your rental car.
